چکیده

The approach of male Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in the wind tunnel to a source of sex pheromone was studied using two video cameras connected to image processing equipment. Three-dimensional records demonstrate that the flight to calling females is quite direct compared to the zigzag flight reported for other species. Convoluted paths displaying bimodal distribution of track and course angles were only obtained with a synthetic phero mone blend consisting of £'-7,Z-9-dodecadienyl acetate, £'-7,Z-9-dodecadien-l-ol and Z-9dodecenyl acetate at the proportions of 1 /0.2/0.05. This suggests that this blend is still suboptimal and that zigzag flight may be due to a lack of precision in upwind motion caused by inade quate composition of the stimulus.

Moths Behaving like Butterflies. Evolutionary Loss of Long Range Attractant Pheromones in Castniid Moths: A Paysandisia archon Model

BACKGROUND In the course of evolution butterflies and moths developed two different reproductive behaviors. Whereas butterflies rely on visual stimuli for mate location, moths use the 'female calling plus male seduction' system, in which females release long-range sex pheromones to attract conspecific males. There are few exceptions from this pattern but in all cases known female moths possess ...

Comparative behavioral and EAG responses of female obliquebanded and redbanded leafroller moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to their sex pheromone components

Studies were conducted investigating the responses of female obliquebanded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) and redbanded leafrollers, Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), to components of their sex pheromone. Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings revealed significant responses from antennae of female moths of both species to the major pheromone component, (Z)...

Multiple mating of male and female codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in apple orchards treated with sex pheromone.

Studies were conducted with codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., to evaluate the mating status of male and female moths in apple, Malus domestica (Borkhausen), orchards treated with and without sex pheromone dispensers. Laboratory studies first examined the effect of multiple mating of male and female moths on female fecundity and egg fertility. Females that had mated three times had a significant...

Unexpected plant odor responses in a moth pheromone system

Male moths rely on olfactory cues to find females for reproduction. Males also use volatile plant compounds (VPCs) to find food sources and might use host-plant odor cues to identify the habitat of calling females. Both the sex pheromone released by conspecific females and VPCs trigger well-described oriented flight behavior toward the odor source. Whereas detection and central processing of ph...

Regulatory Role of PBAN in Sex Pheromone Biosynthesis of Heliothine Moths

Both males and females of heliothine moths utilize sex-pheromones during the mating process. Females produce and release a sex pheromone for the long-range attraction of males for mating. Production of sex pheromone in females is controlled by the peptide hormone (pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide, PBAN). This review will highlight what is known about the role PBAN plays in control...
